None of the videos in the playlist are expert strategies to finishing the level fast and are meant specifically for finishing the game in less than an hour, so the paths and movements in them shouldn't be too hard to replicate if you decide to use them. You can compare your times with the times in the videos provided in the playlist below. With 20 separate Acts that make up the entire game, you have on average 180 seconds for each Act finishing levels quicker than that will give yourself some more breathing room. One good idea to keep track of time is a solution for Sonic the Hedgehog written by adiash73: Since there are 3,600 seconds in 60 minutes, and the game measures time in minutes and seconds, you can easily figure out how much time you have left by writing down how many seconds you spent on each level.
Although this may seem a bit challenging, the save state feature makes things much more manageable try using one save slot for the start of each level, and another for mid-level saves.
